Happy Birthday Moose!

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

Tomorrow (February 1st) is Moose’s third birthday.  Three years ago I read an article about a bunch of domestic bunnies that were left in the parking lot of the RBC Center.  The SPCA of Wake County took in all the bunnies and went to work finding new homes for them.  By the time I read the article in the paper many of them had been adopted, but I saw a little brown one that I just loved.  I adopted Tuscan on February 28, 2004 knowing nothing about having a house rabbit.  It was a learning experience for both of us, but Tuscan was the perfect bunny.  He didn’t bite or dig and got to have the whole upstairs to play around.  Then I decided he needed a buddy.  I started looking on Petfinder and I saw 4 little baby bunnies.  Their mom had been adopted from the SPCA by a couple in Raleigh.  She was also a RBC bunny.  To their surprise the bunny they had just adopted had babies!  When I adopted Moose they gave us a CD full of beautiful pictures.  They took pictures each day to document their growth.  So here are a few pictures of what Moose looked like 3 years ago.

Jody’s Party

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

Tonight we went to a surprise party for Jody to celebrate passing the Professional Engineers test on the first try (with a full time job, wife and baby).  There were lots of people there and we had a great time.  The best part was Ms Wuf was there!

Sleepy Moose

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

I love to spy on the bunnies on the weekends….  Usually they sleep where I can’t see them, but today Moose was sleeping in the open!  She is just too cute.  Sorry for the quality of the photos, but I had to take them through the screen door 10 feet away so as to not disturb her.  I caught her in three very cute poses.  Enjoy.

Welcome Ashlyn

Sunday, January 21st, 2007

Well, we left for Charlotte on Friday evening to attend Casey’s grandmother’s funeral.  She passed away early Thursday morning after several days in the hospital.  We woke up Saturday morning to the news that Casey’s sister had gone in to labor overnight and had her second little girl at 9:21 on Saturday January 20th weighing 5 pounds 15 ounces and 18 inches long.  It was truly a mix of emotions that day.  We attended the funeral for his grandmother that morning and then went to see the baby.  I of course held her for over an hour.  She is gorgeous I can’t wait to see her in a couple weeks.

Nice Day

Another nice winter weekend here in NC.  Today it was in the 70′s again and really nice.  I love wearing my flip flops in the winter!  Although, I would like it to snow at least once this year!!!!  It hasn’t snowed (really snowed) around here in years.  Anyway, since it was so nice we opened up a few windows and it only took J.D. a few seconds to jump up on his favorite window.  He kept closing his eyes and moving his head in the breeze.  Too cute.

Goodbye SweetPea

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

I found out late last night that over the weekend Susan had to make the tough decision to euthanize SweetPea.  She has been sick for several months and I know Susan did so much for her.  Last week she took a turn for the worse and wouldn’t eat, drink or move.  After trying several things she decided it was time to let her go because she was in pain and not getting any better.  SweetPea was an incredibly sweet bunny who loved to eat and would always dance for treats.  She would chase her sister away from the pellets every morning.  She would let you pet her for hours if you had the time, she had perfected the foot flick and always let you know when she was mad at you!  She was a sweet bunny and I enjoyed the time she spent with us.

The first day SweetPea and RoseMarie came to live with me.

Master Bathroom Saga

Monday, January 1st, 2007

There was only one room left to remodel…..  How hard could it be right?  Ha!  What an adventure…  it isn’t done yet.  I started removing the horrible 90′s wallpaper the beginning of December with the plan to have the walls done by Christmas week so we could redo the floors.  Well, I worked on the walls on the weekends and a few nights, but the paper would not come off the walls.  I don’t think it was as bad as the half bath downstairs, but it was bad.  This was my fourth room to remove wallpaper (3 were the bathrooms which are a huge pain).  I have a pretty good technique now, but most of the wall still comes down since it wasn’t put up correctly.

Anyway, we took the week of Christmas off to finish up the bathroom, but I didn’t really figure Christmas into my plan so we didn’t have as many days to work on it as I thought.  We patched and sanded and patched and sanded and the walls still aren’t right.  We painted them anyway…  Just don’t look too closely at them or the other two bathrooms or kitchen for that matter.  When I am pulling the wallpaper that seems like the hardest job until I start sanding.  I really don’t know which is worse.  I picked out light fixtures, but when we removed the old ones we found they had pretty much punched a hole in the wall so we couldn’t install the lights I picked out since there was no wall to mount them.  I picked out some different ones which I don’t love, but they were cheaper and I like them.

Anyway, we managed to finish the walls leaving us the weekend for the floors.  In trying to find out how thick our sub floor was we realized the linoleum that was in the bathrooms wasn’t glued down!!!  No, our cheap builders just stapled it down which we thought was a blessing at first.  We had planned to just tile over the linoleum, but since it just pulled up we felt we shouldn’t tile over it.  After we pulled it up we discovered a squeak in the floor that we don’t remember from before.  Then we found out you can’t tile directly on plywood sub foor so we bought hardibacker boards to put down (which didn’t fit in the car, thank God dad’s truck was nearby).  Of course putting in the new subfloor and tile will raise the floor at least 1/2 inch which means now we have to shave down the doors and raise the toilet.  I was thinking of just putting in new linoleum, but Casey said we would have to fix the squeak anyway so we might as well go ahead with the tile.  We can’t install the tile until the squeak is gone so Casey put about 20 screws into the sub floor, but the squeak persists so now we have to call in a contractor.  We also pulled up the floor in the small bath to find the sub floor around the toilet is in bad shape and has to be replaced due to leaking in the toilet which also has messed up the ceiling downstairs.

So, after many trips to Lowe’s and much money the floor still isn’t done, but the walls are done, the lights are replaced, the new blinds are up, the new fixtures have been bought on ebay (super cheap, let’s hope they don’t look super cheap) and the sinks, shower and tub are cleaner than they have been since Casey bought the house (Thank you Mr. Clean Magic Eraser – absolute best product on the market even made the old grout white again!).  Maybe this weekend we can start on the floor if we can get a contractor in here this week.

We have learned a lot about toilets, walls and flooring in the last month.  I really do like learning about this stuff and we certainly know what to look out for in our next house.  I pity the builder who has to work with us if we build.  After seeing the many corners they cut on this house we are much wiser.  We would not know these things if we hadn’t done this work ourselves.  It is stressful and frustrating (yes I almost cried in Lowes), but I do enjoy it.

Here are a few pictures of the journey.
